The Sikh Religion (2)

Guru Nanak Dev was the founder of Sikh religion and is popularly known as the first Guru of the Sikhs. Guru is derived from Sanskrit and means “one who removes darkness (of ignorance).” Before passing away , Guru Nanak passed on the Divine Light to one of his disciples, Bhai Lehna. He embraced Bhai Lehna and rechristened him as “Angad”. Sikhs called him Guru Angad Dev ji, the second Guru (or master).

There were eight more Gurus (masters) to whom the Divine Light was passed on successively. The ten masters in sequence are:
1. Guru Nanak Dev
2.Guru Angad Dev
3. Guru Amar Daas
4.Guru Ram Daas
5. Guru Arjun Dev
6. Guru Hargobind
7. Guru Har Rai
8. Guru Harikrishan
9. Guru Tegh Bahadur
10. Guru Gobind Singh
The last master Guru Gobind Singh, discontinued the practice of embodied master-ship and passed on the Light to the Holy scripture Of the Sikhs, then known as the “Adi granth”. This book is now called the living guru by the Sikhs.
