In a speech marking the 40th anniversary of her ascension, Queen Elizabeth II declared that 1992 was an ‘annus horribilis’ and quoted from a poem by Adam Lindsay Gordon (born October 19, 1833), “Kindness in another’s trouble, courage in one’s own.”
