For to know a man’s library is, in some measure, to know his mind.

Geraldine Brooks

Happy 59th birthday, Geraldine Brooks! The Australian-born novelist is best known for March, which imagines the wartime service of the March sisters’ father in Little Women.

So please, oh please, we beg, we pray, go throw your TV set away, and in its place you can install, a lovely bookshelf on the wall.

Roald Dahl

As a boarding school student, Roald Dahl (born September 13, 1916) and his classmates would sometimes receive test batches of new choclates from the Cadbury company. Dahl’s childhood desire was to create a chocolate bar that would win the approval of Mr. Cadbury—that dream inspired Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

This democracy!

The choice to secede too acknowledged!

Finally, Scotland voted to remain a part of the United Kingdom. I am impressed by the maturity with which the politicians and public of Scotland and the mainland Britain have conducted themselves during this time. British PM is on record for having ‘begged. the Scottish people for not leaving the United Kingdom. Similar requests were made by the opposition leader. There were no branding of the people wanting to separate as being anti national. It was taken as their right to decide what they wanted. This is what a democracy is and should be!

In India all hell would have broken and entire electronic media, led by official media, would have started a war on the state wanting seceding, there leaders would have been arrested and put behind bar in some other state far apart and state put under President’s rule with the approval of the Parliament! What a difference!

HUMILITY: THE HALLMARK OF GREATNESS

Sometime back I had written about Dr. S. S. Jauhal in my notes…about his greatness in humility. I experienced the humility and greatness of another enlightened soul—Dr. Jaswant Singh Neki, the internationally acclaimed neuron-surgeon and an authority on Sikh theology. As many of you know, I have recently published a commentary on Anand bani of Shri Guru Amar Daas ji in my book ਆਨੰਦੁ ਆਨੰਦੁ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਕਹੈ . I have presented the book to almost 40 scholars/friends. From out of the forty odd enlightened souls, only Dr. Neki took the pain of acknowledging the receipt, reading the book and having the greatness of appreciating the contents with the words:

“I would like to congratulate you for an excellent exposition of Anand Sahib. This aspect of your writing is sure to get you much deserved recognition.”

I am convinced that only great people feel the need to be human and show that humanity towards others. Most of us seem to ignore everything good in others. Thanks to you Dr. Neki. MAY YOUR TRIBE FLOURISH!

I am not eccentric. It’s just that I am more alive than most people. I am an unpopular electric eel set in a pond of catfish.

Edith Sitwell

Edith Sitwell (born September 7, 1887) and her two younger brothers were at the center of a rather dramatic literary scene in London. Dripping with jewelry, Edith often dressed in heavy brocade and velvet gowns; she wrote popular poems that were set to music.

Human Dignity

Is there a difference between Hinduism and Hindutva? Is it necessary that all Indians be Hindus? This take has to be taken by the ordinary Indian dispassionately. Enough of secularism, pseudo secularism and and out right communal ism! By all! The majority community has greater responsibility in ensuring national harmony! Expecting that minorities will crawl before the jungle rule is a great mistake we’ll be making! But that does not mean that minorities do anything that goes against the human values! They to have to reconsider their options and choices and be constructive in their approach.
But PM Modi is not doing any service to the nation by keeping mum on the controversial pronouncements of his supporters! His silence is sending the wrong messages!
Human dignity is beyond compromise, irrespective of the caste creed and color…even religion! Even animals have their dignity and creation of various animal protection organizations prove that we humans are sensitive to this issue. How can we, therefore, ignore demeaning of human beings in the name of nationalism and patriotism? Let us all think and unite against the hypocrites who have taken a conscious decision to go against humanity!
